Early Music

The songs listed here were all written between 1989 and 1992, prior to my tracking days.  I was composing on my Amiga with a program called "Deluxe Music Construction Set".  DMCS would allow you to compose music using standard musical notation and play it back with 8-bit digital sound.

While these tracks are not really a great example of my current skills (I composed most of them between the ages of 12 and 15), I think it demonstrates my long interest in computers and music.  Besides, I had to start somewhere.  :)

I recorded these MP3s directly from my Amiga 500's audio outputs in an attempt to create the most authentic playback possible, so what you hear should be very close to the real thing.  The MP3 compression reduces the quality a bit, but this should be reasonably minimal (they still sound better than the audio tapes I made years ago!).

Why 5 days?  "Cuz I'm too lazy to write 12" was the footnote attached to this song.  This is a version of the 'popular' Christmas carol with a similar title.  I even wrote some lyrics for it (which might be appreciated by those in the Amiga crowd).

This was meant to be the themesong of a cyborg named "The Annihilator" from the "Vatman" comics I used to draw.  He was a heavily armed vigilante employed by Vatman who sent many of his targets to an early grave.

This little theme was inspired by games such as "Castles" and "Ultima 6".  I've always wanted to work on game soundtracks, though this particular song was not attached to any specific project that I was working on.

This is a track that I honestly don't know how to describe... perhaps part rock, part classical?  If I remember correctly, Danny Elfman was a fairly important inspiration for this one.  This was intended as background music for the "Vatman" comics.

This insidiously happy little tune was written to celebrate the most hallowed of beverages: The Slurpee.  In this particular instance, it happened to be Cream Soda flavoured.  For those who have not shared in what is perhaps the greatest invention of the latter 20th Century, a slurpee is a drink made from a mixture of granular ice particles and flavoured syrup.

No, this track is not related to the demoscene group of the same name, I wasn't even aware of the demoscene at the point in time this was written.  This track was actually written for a cartoon series I wanted to make.  I even started animating it myself in DeluxePaint IV on my Amiga, but it proved to be far more work than I was capable of.  A remixed version can be found on my MOD page.

A clown puts on a show while a musician accompanies him on piano... but today Bobo the Clown has a little suprise for all the people who are laughing at him!  The original music was written by the composer Bedrich Smetana back in the 1800's.  The sound effects were taken from the game "It Came From The Desert" and the evil laugh was borrowed from a Batman cartoon by Eric Schwartz.

This track was intended as background music for the "Vatman" comics I used to draw.  Note the overly cheerful yet macabre tone of this track, which would play as Vatman sent his victims to horrific deaths in a large vats of boiling oil.  I later converted this song to MOD format.

This is actually the very first song I ever wrote on my Amiga.  I may have written some small things on notation paper before this, but this is what I would truly consider to be my very first "complete digital work".  It was also intended to be the themesong for a small graphic and text adventure game I was working on at the time.  This song also existed in a previous version with an older music program for the Amiga (not Deluxe Music) and even further back was a piano song which I had recorded on tape with a drum machine playing in the background.

This little latin-sounding oddity was originally intended to be background music for my "Vatman" comics.  I think Vatman had a Mexican assistant who inspired this one.

My friend David Rose (not to be confused with the earlier composer with the same name) originally composed this song on his PC with an Adlib sound card.  He actually read the notes of his melody and accompanyment to me one at a time over the phone and I meticulously copied them into Deluxe Music.  I added the 'solo' sections later, once the main parts were done.  That was probably one of our longest phone calls.  :)

This is the second track I wrote in Deluxe Music.  I had planned this to be the 'flagship song' for a group of cartoon rock musicians that was set in the 'Alvin and the Chipmunks' universe.  It's probably a good thing I didn't pursue this idea further.

There wasn't any significant meaning to this track... I had just written out this music that was stuck in my head and then I 'randomly' chose a name for it.  This is one of the last few Deluxe Music projects I worked on.

This is probably one of my best efforts in Deluxe Music.  This track is about going places and seeing new things.  I even managed to get this song played on the morning show of a popular local radio station, not that it really amounted to anything other than a few comments from some friends at school.  I later remade this track in MOD format.  Music from "The Joshua Tree" by U2 provided some inspiration for this one.

This song was also originally written by Dave (see 'Monday' above).  This was the first track we collaborated on and it is worth mentioning that Dave is also the co-creator of the "Vatman" comics this music was written for.  We had a challenge to see who could come up with the best 'death by boiling oil' song and while this was Dave's offering, mine was "Dip the Scum!".  Dave composed this on his PC with an Adlib card and we copied it into Deluxe Music over the phone note-by-note.  Gee, too bad we didn't have internet connections in our respective homes back then.  ;)

This one was made for another game project I was working on.  The game was a first-person medieval role-playing game.  This track was inspired by the music from the first two "Eye of the Beholder" games.  I later remade this one in MOD format.

This was written just after I had discovered MOD format.  I was still clinging to Deluxe Music and wanted to demonstrate that some techniques of MOD writing were still doable in DMCS.  However, this ended up being one of the last tracks I made in Deluxe Music.

This is the themesong of Vatman, the protagonist of the "Vatman" comics that I used to draw with the help of my friend Dave.  The music of John Williams and Danny Elfman provided much of the inspiration for this.  This was also my most ambitious Deluxe Music project since I was trying to write something 'symphonic'.  It is also the longest single piece of music I wrote during these years.
